The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course consists of five dives, with two required dives - Deep and Underwater Navigation - and three chosen by the student based on their interests. During the Deep Adventure Dive, students learn how to plan dives to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of deeper scuba diving. The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive helps students refine their compass navigation skills and learn how to navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks, and time. The other three Adventure Dives can include photography, buoyancy control, fish identification, exploring wrecks, and many other options.

Students will plan their learning path with their instructor, who will explain the equipment needed for each Adventure Dive. Students will need a compass and dive knife or dive tool, and may also need specialized gear depending on the Adventure Dives they choose.
